The Day I Was Born Project:

How to make the perfect
Baby Time Capsule:

How great would it be if on the day you were born, say for example the 7th of September 1975, everything about that day was captured in time? As you were growing up, you could always look back and see what happened on your own unique day. This would be your own personal Time capsule.

I have given it lots of thought and have come up with the following things that I wish I could look back upon. These are some of the things I have gathered together for my own daughter so she can remember the world on her unique day through her own personalized baby time capsule.

newspapers are great for your baby time capsule
  • I bought a local and national newspaper so she can paw through the news stories.

  • My favorite music CD had been placed into a box, this captures my mood at the time of her birth.

  • Memorabilia from World Cup 2006, info about the Socceroos which captures the feeling of optimism surrounding our entry into the world stage of football.

  • I gathered for my baby time capsule, coins from our currency. A 5c, 10c, 20c, 50c, $1 & $2 and a $5 note.

  • We kept things from her first days on the earth. Her name band so she did not get lost in hospital, her name card from her hospital crib. My discharge card with details of the birth.

  • Celebrity magazines. They were full of gossip form the birth of Tom Cruise & Katie Holmes baby; and all the lovely baby gifts they had been given.

  • I downloaded all her first photos onto a special High Quality 'DataLifePlus' CDR so they would keep forever safe in her baby capsule.

  • I saved a grocery receipt from the weeks shopping. How great would it be to see the price of a kilo of apples or a loaf of bread from 1975?

  • I got a brochure from the local estate agents with a list of houses for sale and their prices.

  • Petrol price is also another great idea. Why not keep a petrol receipt from that day? Who knows how much petrol will cost in 50 years time?

  • I got some brochures from Furniture shops so I could get a feel for interior fashion design.

  • All the cards we were given with all the lovely comments have been kept safe for her to read when older.

  • macy with teddy at 1 week old
  • Her first Teddy bear has been placed in a box along with a photo of her beside the teddy. So she can see how little she was when born. You might have to get a big baby capsule box to fit it in!

  • The first outfit she wore, and grew out of so quickly will amaze her when she is 20 years old.

  • Emails messages from friends have been printed off and stored away so she can read all the excitement her birth created.

  • Movie reviews are another way to remember the moment. You can easily keep clippings from local press reviewing the hits of the moment. e.g Crashultrasound scan of macy for baby time capsule

  • Pictures from her ultra sounds are another great idea to really capture how important your baby was to you.

  • Perhaps you could keep a journal for the first week or month. Jotting down how long they slept for each night, any funny characteristics, when they first looked at you, how they enjoyed or cried at their first bath. Not only is this great for your child to see what they were like those first few days, but she will also be able to understand how you were feeling!

  • Another great idea is to record adverts from the TV. There are various ways to do this whether you download it from the internet or record straight from the TV. However this is a great one to be able to look back on, have you ever seen a TV ad for washing up powder from the 50’s? How times change!
The list of things and memories that can be stored away is infinite. You can let your imagination run wild! I know mums that have kept bits of the umbilical cord, strange eh!

The most important thing to remember is that your baby time capsule does not have to be expensive. All it needs is thought and effort and you can have the perfect baby gift!
